Lets face it we're all getting older and living longer, and whether you're a health freak, like a large tipple often, or are a couch potato we can't get away from the fact that we live in a 24 hour society and this isn't good for overall health; some of us are going to need more help than others to make sure our brain stays healthy as we get older!

Here are a few food choices that are likely to have a positive impact on your brain health as you age:

Blueberries

Contain powerful antioxidants that help to protect the brain from free radicals and limit the ageing process. Can help to protect from Dementia.

Oily Fish

Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for brain function. Omega-3 fatty acids also contain anti-inflammatories, which we know are also good for skin health and preventing acne (see previous blogs).

Nuts and Seeds

High in Vitamin E, which has been linked to reducing cognitive decline.

Avocodos

Loaded with monounsaturated fats which contribute to better blood flow and lower blood pressure. This in turn means better brain health as oxygen and nutrients reach the brain unimpeded.

Whole grains

Promote heart health which in turn means good brain health due to oxygen and nutrient flow.

Beans

Stabilise blood glucose which the brain requires in steady flow for optimum function.

Pomegranates

It's those antioxidants again!

Tea

As long as it's freshly brewed i.e. not processed or in a bottle. Tea provides a small amount of caffeine which can help to promote a good memory, attention and increase mood. Tea also contains antioxidants (particularly Catechines), and we know what antioxidants do!

Dark Chocolate

Contains antioxidants AND caffeine. Should be had in moderation........

Tomatoes

Contain lycopene, a power antioxidant and help protect against free radicals. Choose cooked or processed tomatoes.......

Blackcurrants

Known to be extremely high in Vitamins C. Vitamin C helps cognitive function and helps to protect against degenerative conditions like Dementia.

Broccoli

Loaded with Vitamin K, broccoli is a good enhancer of cognitive function.

I'm sure we can make a lovely salad and pudding with that lot!!!
